Conor Gallagher interview on feeling 'wanted and appreciated' at Atletico Madrid after Chelsea limbo - The Athletic

Rising star praises Atleti's winning culture and manager Diego Simeone's guidance

Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher has spoken of his delight at finding a "home" at Atletico Madrid, where he feels "wanted and appreciated" after a frustrating period at his parent club.

The 22-year-old midfielder joined Atleti on loan in the January transfer window, having struggled to break into the Chelsea team under Thomas Tuchel. But Gallagher has quickly become a key player for Diego Simeone's side, starting 10 of their last 11 matches in all competitions and scoring four goals.

In an exclusive interview with The Athletic, Gallagher said he is "loving life" in Madrid and is grateful for the opportunity to play for such a big club. "I'm really enjoying my time here," he said. "The club has made me feel very welcome, and the fans have been great. I'm just happy to be playing regularly and contributing to the team's success."

Gallagher also praised Simeone, who he described as "a great manager." "He's very demanding, but he's also very fair," he said. "He wants his players to give their all, but he also knows how to get the best out of them. I'm learning a lot from him, and I'm really grateful for his guidance."

Gallagher's form for Atleti has led to suggestions that he could be in contention for a place in England's squad for the World Cup in Qatar later this year. But the midfielder is not getting ahead of himself. "I'm just focused on playing well for Atleti and helping the team achieve our goals," he said. "If I can do that, then maybe I'll have a chance of going to the World Cup. But for now, I'm just taking it one game at a time."

Gallagher's comments come as Chelsea are reportedly considering selling him in the summer. The Blues are said to be impressed with his progress at Atleti, but they are also aware that he is unlikely to get regular playing time at Stamford Bridge next season.

If Gallagher does leave Chelsea, he will do so with the club's best wishes. "Conor is a great player with a bright future," said Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel. "We wish him all the best at Atletico Madrid, and we look forward to seeing him continue to develop and improve."
